Operational Optimization of the Lithium-Ion Batteries of TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X

After a decade of successful TanDEM-X mission operations, the degradation satellite's battery capacity due to ageing has defined new challenge for DLRs operations team. In response, novel machine learning strategy been gradually deployed in Mission Planning System order optimize utilization. The objective this is twofold: 1) protecting operational state while 2) maximizing executed SAR acquisitions under newly introduced planning restrictions. limits, resulting utilization optimization, have communicated customers user-friendly way assist their future planning, minimizing number not-executed requests energy and power constraints imposed by joint TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X System. article, we detail quantitative approach model satellites' behavior comparison previously used physical models, outline process as implemented System, 3) present results satellite telemetry, 4) discuss evolution toward higher accuracy telemetry estimations.
